Not Every Dollar Has the Same Job: The Now, Later, Never Money Framework

One of the most useful reframes in retirement planning is also one of the simplest: stop thinking about all your money as if it serves the same purpose. It doesn't.

At LynnLeigh & Company, we organize a plan around three categories — Now Money, Later Money, and Never Money — because each one has a different job, a different time horizon, and a different amount of risk it can comfortably absorb.

Now Money is for short-term spending and near-term stability — bills, emergencies, a planned purchase in the next year or two. Cash genuinely shines here. If the money is needed soon, the goal isn't return. The goal is certainty.

Later Money is for the middle and later years of retirement. This portion of your plan has a much longer time horizon, and it typically needs some combination of growth and income to keep pace with inflation and support future spending. When Later Money sits in cash for years, it may feel conservative — but in practice, it often means those dollars simply aren't doing their job.

Never Money is for legacy — heirs, charitable goals, future generations. This money usually has the longest runway of all, which means it can typically tolerate more short-term fluctuation in service of long-term growth. Leaving Never Money in cash may feel emotionally comfortable, but it's often the most economically inefficient place it can be.

Once you see your money through this lens, the question changes. It's no longer "Is cash good or bad?" It becomes: "What is this money actually supposed to do?" When that becomes clear, the right placement usually becomes clear too.

This is the heart of Big Picture Planning® — not guessing at what markets will do next, but building a plan around what each dollar is actually for.

Here's how we can help. If you're not sure which category your own savings fall into, that's exactly the conversation worth having.
